Smooth and sippable Sask s ultra premium vodka

Post on: 2011-11-02 By: admin

As the air turns colder, we all may need a little something to warm our bellies. Vodka is always easy to rely on for the simple fact that it makes delicious cocktails and tastes excellent all on its own. After a year of preparation, Saskatchewan's first micro distillery opened in Lumsden at the beginning of September. Colin and Meredith Schmidt thought the timing was perfect for the venture."We thought 'why wouldn't we do this?'" explains Meredith. "Nobody is doing it around here, and a lot of liquors are grain-based. It seemed like a big hole in the market that no one was doing it."The Last Mountain Distillery produces ultra-premium vodka, available in two sizes, priced at $32 and $14. Whisky is coming soon. Once the couple is able to sustain quality control and ensure cost effectiveness, we will be able to taste Saskmade rum as well. They sent a sample of their vodka for its first review to Chip Dykstra, author of the Rum Howler blog and respected authority on all things booze. The following is an excerpt from his review, which will be published at therumhowlerblog.wordpress.com on November 1:"The first full swallow (shot) of the Last Mountain Vodka was very nice. The spirit imparted a spicy but gentle 'pop' in the back of my mouth with warm citrus flavours that went down smoothly. The clean mouth-feel continues to impress all of my guests (and myself), and pleasant aftertastes of lemon and lime are all that remain after the swallow."The process for obtaining the ultra premium vodka is fascinating but too detailed to discuss at length here. In short, a mash consisting of Manitoba-grown corn, yeast and water is fermented then distilled. Two stripping runs remove the heads and tails from the vodka, which Meredith explains is very important to achieve a smooth-drinking product."The parts that boil at a lower temperature (the tails) are what cause people to go blind, so we get rid of that! The heads are also not the quality alcohol we keep."Last Mountain Distillery focuses on the middle runs during the double distillation process because this is the stuff that contributes to a wonderful night and not-too-bad morning after. The middle run is the purest and contains the fewest amounts of congeners, notorious for causing headaches."We've learned a lot in the last year and we're both wishing we'd paid a lot more attention in chemistry," Meredith laughs. The vodka is served at a variety of locations in Regina and Saskatoon and is also sold at several offsales in both cities. It's available for purchase by the bottle in Moose Jaw and at the Lumsden Bar and Hotel. If you're in the area, the Schmidts also operate a storefront next to the distillery on Hill Street, although you just may have to compete with local residents to get your hands on this stuff."The town has been so supportive. The mayor was one of our first customers. Lumsden was definitely the right choice for us."Jenn welcomes feedback: jksharp@ thestarphoenix.com.Follow her on Twitter: twitter.com/JennKSharp
